As the world marks the International Literacy day today, Macheo Children’s Center seek to reflect and focus on the status of literacy and its importance to individuals, society and communities. The theme of this year is reading the past, writing the future.

Macheo recognizes that literacy advancement is a human right and a means of personal and social development. That is why we promote inclusive education to ensure that the learning needs of all young people and adults are met through equitable access to appropriate learning and life-skills programs in schools to reach their full potential. We ensure that children not only have ability to read, but the ability to read well, to process information and solve problems. We believe that education opens up a window of opportunities to everyone and makes an essential contribution to wide variety of goals like eradicating poverty, promoting democracy, promoting decent work, promoting better healthcare, promoting food security and achieving gender equality for sustainable development.

Education has long been recognized as a way of breaking barriers for individual, social and national development, and International Literacy Day serves to remind us that wherever we are, however much we know, there is always more to learn.
