At the end of 2005, we built a children’s home in Kenya in order to do something about the enormous number of orphans that needed taking care of. Since its start, Macheo has been trying to apply an ambitious agenda to each child that deserves a fairer chance. The realization that the challenges for these children and families are complex and interrelated steered us towards a holistic approach. These domains are:
• Education & skills
• Protection
• Shelter
• Food & nutrition
• Care
• Psychosocial wellbeing
• Health
The Children’s Home
At the end of 2005, we built a children’s home in Kenya in order to do something about the enormous number of orphans that needed taking care of. We have been developing ever since and 56 children have found a new home..
Education & skills
We ensure that more than 14.000 school-children in the slums of Thika receive a meal every day and have access to psychological care. Accordingly, we are seeing results improve..
Secondary School Program
Making it possible for young children and especially girls to attend secondary school has many lasting effects. Girls entering puberty are likely to become pregnant at an early age when not in school.
Health program
There are many challenges for low-income families to access adequate health care in the rural and urban slums. Acknowledging the barriers that prevent access to health care for low-income families is the first step towards determining future sustainable solutions. Macheo supports children and their parents and caregivers to seek timely medical treatment, information and linking them with the government for insurance to ease access to medical care.
Health program
Moringa project
The aim of the project is to provide a sustainable solution to address malnutrition, poverty, and environmental degradation by increasing forest cover by 10% in line with the Kenya Forestry policy which promotes at least 10% tree cover of one’s land.
Our project aims at reviving the old knowledge and promoting the use on Moringa, which is nowadays called “super food” due to its highly valuable components. Moringa can change the lives of families who would get access to their daily basic nutritional needs, access to safe water and ultimately Moringa would open doors for economic growth of the small communities.
This project will enable us to help our existing beneficiaries and also reach other people in the community. Our main focus will be on empowering women in the rural areas.
The Moringa project is a good fit for our beneficiaries as it offers the following:
Health benefits: medicinal and nutritional
Empowerment: source of income
Environmental impact: increasing land use by providing tree cover.
Sustainability: long-term benefits and impact
We are very grateful to our donors for the support of this project! More donations are most welcome to scale up the project.

Rotary Sanpads project
This project is designed to decrease absenteeism of adolescent girls during their menstruation. The project runs on 81 primary schools in Thika. At this moment nearly 5,000 girls are provided with sanitary pads every month. The project also trains approximately 12,000 girls and boys on various subjects which include menstruation, hygiene, self-esteem, etc.
Household economic strenghthening
This program aims at improving the situation of a child by improving the family situation. We strengthen the economic activities of vulnerable families so that they can build up their assets and savings to enable them become better caregivers for their children.
Income Generating Projects
Since its establishment, we’ve set up income generating projects to provide financial stability. This has been challenging, but we’re well on the way. It also shows the children that our earnings are the result of our own hard work and not only as the result of donations from the West.
